A special election for Oct. 22 has been called by the Avoyelles Parish School Board to fill the board’s District 6 seat.

The election will fill the vacancy left when Lizzie Ned, who was elected to the seat last fall, was ruled ineligible by a state court because she did not live in the district of which she was re-elected. She had already served a term representing the district but the mistake in her residence was not discovered until shortly before her re-election last fall.

After Ned was removed from her seat, the board appoited Rev. Mary Hayward−Jones as the District 6 board member in an interim capacity.

The qualifying period for the election will be from Sept. 6-8, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office.

Ned has also sought relief from the federal court in her situation. That court has been asked to move the district lines to include Ned's residence in the district, which would enable her to be a candidate in next October's election.
