George Jones is best known for such hits as “(I Was Country) When Country Wasn’t Cool,” “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” and “Yesterday’s Wine,” just to name a few. Jones cut his first record, “No Money in this Deal,” in 1954 and soon had his first chart hit in 1955 with “Why Baby Why,” followed up with “Just One More” in 1956. Jones experimented with Rockabilly under the name “Thumper Jones” and had his first number one hit in 1959 with “White Lightning.” In 1961 he hit number one again with “Tender Years” and “She Thinks I Still Care.”
Jones has recorded duet singles with such notable singers including: Margie Singleton, Gene Pitney, Brenda Carter, Melba Montgomery, James Taylor, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Brenda Lee, Lacy J. Dalton, Shelby Lynne, Randy Travis, Sammy Kershaw, Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks . Jones’ most notable duets were often with his third wife, Tammy Wynette, with whom he recorded several duets, all of which were all top ten hits.
To date, Jones has had 13 number one singles and 30 top five singles. Jones has won numerous awards including single of the year and male vocalist of the year honors from the Country Music Association (CMA) in 1980 and 1981. Jones also won Grammy Awards in 1980 and 1999 for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. December 2008, Jones was one of the annual recipients of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.
