16 Historic Homes on Slate for Natchez Fall Pilgrimage

Natchez, Mississippi – The doors of some of the finest antebellum homes in Natchez, Mississippi, will open to visitors for a two week period beginning September 30th, 2011.

Many of the homes on tour are privately owned, and can only be toured during the special Pilgrimage seasons of Fall and Spring; others are open daily year round, and are added to the seasonal tours just because they are so extraordinary.

The homes are scheduled for tour so that visitors can select houses to see either in the morning, afternoon, or both, and there are a number of special events taking place in the evenings for nightly entertainment too. Visitors will meet Natchez characters which once occupied the homes, as they are portrayed by local actors dressed in period costume, and learn about the history of the home and the families who left their mark on this historic city.

One of the remarkable re-enactments that will be available to see, is the raising of the first American Flag over Natchez, by an actor portraying Major Andrew Ellicott of Buck’s County, PA, who was sent to the region by then President George Washington, to mark the boundary between the United States and Spanish Louisiana, which had been set at the 31st parallel by the Treaty of San Lorenzo de Real.

After the brief re-enactment, have a chat with the Major over appetizers and libations, and enjoy a tour of the 1798 constructed home.

Other evening events are Amos Polk’s Voices of Hope, a stirring gospel concert held at the Carriage House Restaurant on the ground of Stanton Hall, the hilarious comedy The Mississippi Medicine Show, or an evening of classical piano performed by Joe Stone in his antebellum music room.
