The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office will begin a roadside trash pickup program utilizing offender labor. This project has been on the drawing board for quiet some time and is a collaborative effort between his office and the members of the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury.

“The amount of trash and debris thrown about Avoyelles Parish roads is an eyesore for our citizens and not a very welcoming impression for visitors to our parish,” Sheriff Doug Anderson said. “The litter strewn about roads and highways negatively affects economic development and retards proper drainage.”

The State Dept. of Corrections utilizes offender labor for trash details on state right-of-way but there was a significant gap when it came to our Parish Roads according to the Sheriff. The Policy Jury has provided a utility trailer, trash bags and the means of moving the filled bags to a dump site. The Sheriff’s Office will provide the security personnel, towing vehicle and inmate labor. Sheriff Anderson said that citizens will soon begin to see the trash pickup detail on various parish roads throughout the parish and ask that everyone drive cautiously to avoid any potential accidents.

Any Avoyelles resident in need of this service are can call Barbara Rabalais, Corrections Division, A.P.S.O. at 619-3965 or Capt. Floyd Laprarie 318-305-2717 or contact your local Police Jury member for assistance.
