At 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, the body of Jontrell Ford, age 27 of Hwy. 417 in Batchelor was discovered by a tugboat captain, who called the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.
From Monday afternoon until Wednesday morning, search and rescue teams, along with the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office and La. Department of Wildlife and Fisheries had boats in the river searching for Ford’s body.
Allegedly, a shooting early on Monday morning, led to the possible suicide of Ford. According to Avoyelles Parish Sheriff Doug Anderson, Ford was involved in a fight at the “Old Country Club,” located at 3560 Old La. 1 near Simmesport and allegedly shot a man.
The victim, a 21 year old man, suffered with a gunshot wound to the lower leg. The victim was transported to Avoyelles Hospital in Marksville by witnesses.
After the incident, deputies discovered Ford’s pick up truck on top of the Atchafalaya River Bridge in Simmesport.
Ford had, according to reports, called members of his family admitting to killing someone at the party. Anderson said Ford also told his family he was going to “kill himself” by jumping off the bridge.
