Flanders, age 68, of Hessmer passed away Monday, September 19, 2011 at Bayou Vista Nursing Home.
She was a long time writer and editor of the Avoyelles Journal and The Marksville Weekly News. She authored two books, Hessmer Station and In His Keeping. Before her time at the newspaper was a teacher at Simmesport High and False River Academy. She was a foster mother and she her husband cared for sixteen children in a 12 year period.
She was a graduate of Simmesport High and USL with a degree in English Journalism.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Bertha Marie Riche and father, Hebert Paul Riche, Sr.
She is survived by her husband, Franklin Flanders, Sr. of Hessmer; two sons, Franklin Flanders, Jr. of Ridgeland, Mississippi and Christopher Flanders of Zachary; one daughter, Bernadette Sheperd of Deville; two brothers, Herbert Paul Riche, Jr. of Baton Rouge and Kenneth Thomas Riche, Sr. of Simmesport; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Escude Funeral home of Simmesport from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Wake service will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 7 p.m. and re-open the following day at 8 a.m.
