BATON ROUGE – John Lombardi is a history professor who forgot the Number One lesson in Louisiana politics -- curry the governor's favor.

Lombardi, fired Friday as president of the LSU System, was an outspoken critic of Gov. Bobby Jindal's cuts in higher education budgets as well as reorganization plans.

Twelve of 16 members of the LSU board decided Friday that Lombardi would be unable to build or reconstruct bridges to the administration and other people who are significant in the political process.

Lombardi in an appearance at LSU Eunice earlier this month told that school's supporters that they should never say never about anything in Louisiana politics.

He was right.

Now former system president William Jenkins will come out of retirement to serve as interim president.
