Pilot Leonard Castille took these remarkable shots of the roughly two acres gnawed from a point of land containing several camps or homes near the settlement called Happy Town, on the Atchafalaya River.

The washout, which occurred suddenly in the pre-dawn hours of April 20, claimed two pickup trucks, a boat and trailer and a four-wheeler. It came precariously close to undermining the home of Glen and Linda Gallet, who awoke to find the river where their back yard and driveway — and the vehicles — had been when they went to bed.

At Butte La Rose, some 10 miles downstream, NOAA reports the river has crested at 19.8 feet (flood stage is 25) and is forecast to begin a slow fall.
