Qualifying ended Friday, July 11, for the October 4th election.

There will be several races in this fall election. Besides the anticipated district attorney and Ville Platte City Marshal races, there will be an election for several seats in the Village of Pine Prairie. There’s also a race for the Justice of the Peace, Ward Five seat and an alderman’s seat in the Town of Mamou.

One of the biggest races this fall will be the district attorney’s race. Incumbent Brent Coreil has served as district attorney for 12 years. His challenger, Trent Brignac, served as a criminal prosecutor for 11 years.

The city marshal’s race will be among three candidates. Mike Lee was appointed to the position in January after former marshal Eddie Soileau left office to become sheriff. John “Blaine” Matte Sr., a retired state trooper (not a Ville Platte police officer) who is currently working for the U.S. Marshal as an aviator security officer, and Ronald “T” Doucet, a member of the Evangeline Parish Police Jury.

Besides the races, there are several who had no opposition and are considered elected to the seat. They include both district judge seats, city judge Donald J. Launey Jr., Justice of the Peace (JP) Ward Three Hope Landreneau, JP Ward Four Amanda Fuselier, Constable Ward Three Joe Deshotel Jr. and Constable Ward Five J. Michael Causey.
