Driver Impairment suspected in I-55 Fatality

Hammond – Today at 12:48 am, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 55 north of LA 3234 at milepost #32 in Tangipahoa Parish.

Upon investigation, it was determined that Gwendolyn Jackson, (B/F age 57) of Hammond, LA, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 in a 2001 Mercedes SUV. A 2007 Hyundai, driven by Caleb Perricone (W/M age 18) of Ponchatoula, LA, was traveling southbound on Interstate 55. As the Mercedes SUV proceeded northbound against oncoming traffic it impacted the Hyundai in a head-on collision.

Both drivers were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and were transported to Northoaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance.

Jackson suffered moderate injuries in the crash and is suspected of drug impairment. The results of a toxicology test are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Jackson was charged with Vehicular Homicide, Traveling the Wrong Way on a One Way Roadway, and 1st Offense DWI. Upon release from Northoaks, she was booked at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite.

Perricone received severe injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Alcohol use is not suspected with a blood sample pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
